Separate metal elements of the gateways

Men die making railroads.

And bridges.

And dams.

And skyscrapers.

Men die in factories.

They die on oil rigs.

They die in coal mines.

Men die in steel mills.

The rich pay for progress with their bank accounts.

The poor pay with their blood.

In one year in the early part of the 20th century, the deaths of 196 men in one Southwestern Pennsylvania steel mill were the result of workplace accidents.

This is the story of one that wasn’t.

GRIST FROM THE MILL is a trilogy of works of storytelling inspired by fairy tales and folk music, specifically Irish murder ballads which spoke of ugly events with considered beauty. The steel mills of Southwestern Pennsylvania go beyond serving as a backdrop to play a pivotal role in each installment. This piece, 1902, begins the series.
